Your brand is already showing up inside ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews — probably more than you'd guess. The problem is where those citations point. A June 2026 audit of 226 Indian brands across five AI platforms found that just 4.1% of citations linked back to the brand's own website; the remaining 95.9% lived on third-party pages — directories, forums, comparison articles, anywhere but the source. If you've been treating "AI visibility" as a problem for next year, this is the data that says it isn't.
Two things happened at once in 2026 that make this worth fixing now. First, Google rebuilt how AI Overviews and AI Mode surface links. Second, independent research in India confirmed that most brands have no control over how AI represents them, even when they are being talked about constantly. Together, they change what "search visibility" means for any B2B or high-ticket business trying to be found through AI rather than a search bar.
What Changed on 6 May 2026
On 6 May 2026, Google's VP of Search Product Management announced five changes to how AI Overviews and AI Mode handle links. None of them are cosmetic:
- Inline links — citations now sit next to the specific claim they support, inside the AI response, instead of grouped in a footer.
- Hover previews — on desktop, users can preview a linked page's title before clicking, raising the bar for how a page's title and framing need to read out of context.
- Subscription labels — AI Overviews now flag when a cited source is a publication the user already subscribes to, and Google reports people are "significantly more likely" to click a labelled link.
- Suggested angles — responses now surface links to "go deeper" on a facet of the topic, effectively creating a second citation slot for original, narrow-angle content.
- Community perspectives — responses now pull in a preview of what people are saying on forums, review sites and social platforms, not just what brands publish about themselves.
AI Overviews now appear on close to half of all Google queries — up from around 31% a year earlier, according to industry tracking. This isn't a UI tweak on the margins. It's the primary interface a growing share of your buyers use before they ever land on a website, and Google just gave itself five separate places to decide whether that interface mentions you.
The Real Problem Isn't Whether You're Cited — It's Where
This is where the India data gets uncomfortable. Being mentioned by AI is not the same as being represented by AI. When 96% of your brand's citations sit on someone else's domain — a directory, a review aggregator, a forum thread, a competitor's comparison page — you don't control the framing, the accuracy, or whether the information is even current.
A related global finding reinforces the same pattern: roughly 80% of citations from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot don't rank in Google's top 100 results at all, and only about 38% of Google AI Overview citations still come from a page that also ranks in the traditional top 10. Rank and citation have quietly become two separate games — and most B2B teams in India and the US are still resourced to play only one of them.
Build Citation Infrastructure, Not Just Content
The fix isn't "write more blog posts." It's treating your own domain as the primary source AI should be citing, and making that structurally easy for the model to do — the core of what falls under AI search visibility work. Three things matter most.
1. Schema before more copy
Structured data is the difference between content an LLM can parse with confidence and content it has to guess about. Article, FAQPage, Organization, Product and LocalBusiness schema — applied to your highest-intent pages first — measurably change citation odds, as the stats above show. This is mechanical, unglamorous work, part of the technical layer covered in our B2B SEO and lead-gen approach, and it is usually the highest-leverage item on the list.
2. Write for the five new surfaces, not the old snippet box
Inline citations reward claim-plus-source paragraphs written so a single sentence can be lifted cleanly. Suggested angles reward publishing the narrow, original-data version of a topic everyone else covers generically — the opposite instinct to "cover everything broadly." Community perspectives reward showing up accurately on the third-party platforms AI already trusts for your category, rather than ignoring them because they're "not your website."
3. Close the loop off-site, deliberately
Since most citations will keep landing on third-party domains regardless of what you do on your own site, the realistic goal is influencing what those domains say. That means actively seeding accurate, detailed information on the comparison sites, review platforms and trade publications AI already cites in your category — the same editorial citation-loop logic that works for GEO generally, applied specifically to the handful of domains your buyers' AI answers keep pulling from.
Ranking #1 was never really the goal. Being the source the AI trusts enough to cite accurately is — and Google just rebuilt the shelf that citation sits on.
What This Looks Like in Real Estate
Take a mid-sized real estate developer or brokerage in India, a category where AI is already reshaping lead behaviour. Portals like 99acres, MagicBricks and Housing.com dominate what AI cites for property queries — the developer's own site is often invisible in the answer, even for the developer's own project. Industry data on AI-assisted lead handling suggests WhatsApp-based qualification and automated, source-triggered follow-up can cut manual follow-up load by 60–70% and lift lead-to-site-visit conversion by 25–40%, largely because a well-documented majority of buyers transact with whichever company responds first.
None of that fixes the citation problem by itself. But pairing schema-marked project pages on the developer's own domain with accurate, current listings on the portals AI already trusts closes both gaps at once — better citation representation, and faster conversion once a lead actually lands on-site. Where to Start This Week
Before any of this becomes a quarterly project, it's worth establishing where you actually stand. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode the exact questions your buyers ask, and note whether your brand shows up — and if it does, whether the citation points to you or to someone describing you secondhand. Run this check in about 10 minutes with our free AI Growth Scorecard →, then prioritise schema on your five highest-intent pages and identify the two or three third-party domains your category's AI answers keep pulling from.
Ranking #1 was never really the goal — being the source the AI trusts enough to cite accurately is. Most brands, in India and the US alike, haven't rebuilt what they put on Google's new shelf.
